Counselling comes in many different ways. It can be individual, couples, family or in groups. There are many techniques used but all are there to help you explore your personality, feelings and thoughts, why you are like you are, events which have influenced you, what parts of yourself that you would like to change and also parts that you’re happy with.
Counselling can’t help everyone but it can help alot of people. To get the most from counselling you need to feel ready to explore yourself. To be willing to try even when at times it seems so hard. It is really important to keep to your appointments and try to attend every one. These are usually weekly at the same time if possible to keep continuity.
Counselling works by allowing you to have a safe and secure space to explore yourself, your feelings and thoughts. It progresses at your pace and deals with the areas of yourself that you want to deal with. The time is totally for you.
Counselling will help you to work towards finding your own answers. You won’t be told what you should or shouldn’t be doing or feeling. It helps you to reach a state where you are happy with yourself. To reach this place takes a different amount of time for different people. Some may be weeks others years but that is ok.
During the sessions it is your choice what you want to talk about. It may be that you need to explore some of the events within your life but only when you are ready to do this. You are not forced to disclose anything that you feel you don’t wish to. At times the process may be hard. It wouldn’t be fair to say otherwise but the rewards can be emence. It can help boost your confidence and self esteem so you can feel happier making decisions.
Anything that is discussed in any session is completely confidential. It will not be used against you nor will it be discussed with anyone outside of the room. It is your time for you to feel safe, to be able to speak without fear of being judged or it effecting any decisions that are being made.
